Recommended for all crew, It provides a clear, practical overview of how onboard systems work—engines, electrics, fuel, and water—without overwhelming detail.
Learn what makes marine diesel and outboard engines run, and understand the basic systems that keep them cool, fuelled, and operating properly.
Get familiar with the main components like the propeller shaft, gearbox, water pumps, fuel systems and what each componant part does.
Practice simple maintenance tasks like checking oil, changing filters, and recognising and identifying early warning signs before bigger problems occur.
Build confidence handling tools, understaning fastening and conducting hands-on repairs with guidance from experienced instructors.

This course is designed for yacht skippers and crew on both sailing and motor yachts who want a practical understanding of marine engines and yacht systems—not for those pursuing a professional engineering career. If your goal is MCA engineer certification, AEC1 is the correct pathway, not this course.
No. This course overlaps significantly with AEC1, particularly in engine theory, systems, and maintenance principles. Taking both offers no added value and is not recommended. Choose one or the other based on your career goals.
Intro to Marine Engineering is non-examined, hands-on, and operationally focused, ideal for skippers and crew. AEC1 is a formal MCA engineering qualification aimed at those progressing towards Engineer Officer certification. Different outcomes, different audiences.
No. There is no exam, test, or assessment. This is a skills-and-knowledge course, and participants who complete it receive a Certificate of Attendance, not an MCA certificate.
