Who is the Intro to Marine Engineering course for?

This course is designed for yacht skippers and crew on both sailing and motor yachts who want a practical understanding of marine engines and yacht systems—not for those pursuing a professional engineering career. If your goal is MCA engineer certification, AEC1 is the correct pathway, not this course.

Can I take this course together with AEC1?

No. This course overlaps significantly with AEC1, particularly in engine theory, systems, and maintenance principles. Taking both offers no added value and is not recommended. Choose one or the other based on your career goals.

What’s the difference between Intro to Marine Engineering and AEC1?

Intro to Marine Engineering is non-examined, hands-on, and operationally focused, ideal for skippers and crew. AEC1 is a formal MCA engineering qualification aimed at those progressing towards Engineer Officer certification. Different outcomes, different audiences.

Is there an exam or assessment?

No. There is no exam, test, or assessment. This is a skills-and-knowledge course, and participants who complete it receive a Certificate of Attendance, not an MCA certificate.

What engines will I learn about?

You’ll cover both marine diesel engines and petrol outboard motors, including:

  • 2-stroke and 4-stroke operation
  • Fuel, cooling, lubrication, air, exhaust, and electrical systems

This reflects what yacht crew actually encounter on board.

How practical is the course?

Very. Hands-on work runs throughout both days in the Galileo Engineering Workshop, including:

  • Servicing a marine diesel engine
  • Valve lash adjustment
  • Pump, impellor, thermostat, and fuel system work
  • Electrical wiring and battery testing

This is not a classroom-only course.

Will I learn fault-finding and maintenance skills?

Yes. A core focus is real-world fault finding and understanding:

  • Reactive vs preventative vs predictive maintenance
  • Fuel hygiene and lubrication oils
  • Galvanic corrosion and bonding systems

These are critical for avoiding breakdowns at sea.

Does the course cover yacht systems and electrics?

Yes. You’ll gain a working understanding of:

  • Shafting, propellers, bearings, and gearboxes
  • Pumps, valves, and sea cocks
  • Batteries, starter motors, solenoids, and basic electrics

Enough to diagnose issues and speak confidently with engineers.
