Frequently
Asked Questions

What is Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA)?

PSA is a mandatory STCW security module for all seafarers working on ISPS-compliant vessels, including commercial yachts, cruise ships, cargo vessels, and offshore units. It trains crew to recognise security threats and respond appropriately as part of the ship’s overall security system.

Who issues and recognises the PSA certificate?

The PSA certificate is issued under MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) standards and complies with STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. MCA-approved security training is internationally recognised and accepted by flag states, port authorities, yacht operators, and insurers worldwide.

Who needs to take the PSA course?

PSA is required for all crew serving on vessels subject to the ISPS Code who do not have designated security duties. This includes deck, interior, engineering, and junior officers working on commercial yachts and ships.

What is the difference between PSA and PDSD?

PSA (Proficiency in Security Awareness) is for all crew and focuses on recognising threats and following security procedures.
PDSD (Proficiency in Designated Security Duties) is for crew assigned specific security responsibilities, such as monitoring access points or conducting security checks. Most entry-level crew need PSA, not PDSD.

Is there an exam for PSA?

Yes. There is a written test covering maritime security awareness, threat recognition, access control, reporting procedures, and individual responsibilities under the ship security plan.

Is there a practical assessment?

PSA is primarily classroom-based. Assessment focuses on understanding scenarios, correct decision-making, and awareness of security procedures rather than physical practical exercises.

What happens if I fail the exam?

If you don’t achieve the required standard, you can take a resit. Instructors will explain what areas need improvement before the retake. The objective is to ensure security competence, not to fail students.

How important is English for the PSA course?

English is essential — both written and spoken. You must understand security briefings, participate in scenario discussions, and complete the written exam in English. Clear communication is critical in real security incidents onboard.
