Frequently
Asked Questions

Do the new STCW amendments apply to this course?

Yes. All STCW amendments that entered into force on 1 January 2026 are fully implemented in this PSSR course.
These updates place stronger emphasis on human factors, including situational awareness, effective communication, fatigue management, cultural awareness in multinational crews, and personal responsibility for safety and security onboard.

Who issues and recognises the PSSR certificate?

The PSSR certificate is issued under MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) standards and complies with STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. MCA-approved certification is internationally recognised and accepted by flag states, yacht operators, insurers, and crew agencies worldwide.

Is there an exam for PSSR?

Yes. There is a written test covering safety responsibilities, emergency procedures, accident prevention, and professional behaviour onboard. The exam checks understanding of real onboard scenarios rather than memorisation.

Is there a practical assessment in PSSR?

PSSR is primarily classroom-based. Assessment focuses on participation, understanding of procedures, and situational awareness rather than physical practical exercises.

How important is English for the PSSR course?

English is essential, both written and spoken. You must be able to understand safety briefings, participate in discussions, and complete the written exam in English. Clear communication is a key part of safe shipboard operations.
