Frequently
Asked Questions

What is the Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) course?

EDH is an STCW deck qualification required for seafarers working in qualified deck roles on commercial vessels. It certifies that you have the practical seamanship skills, safety knowledge, and experience to perform deck duties at an operational level.

Who is the EDH certificate for?

EDH is intended for experienced deck crew who are progressing beyond entry-level roles. It is commonly required for:

  • Able Seafarer / AB-level duties
  • progression toward Officer of the Watch (OOW)
  • deck roles on commercial vessels and larger yachts

Is EDH MCA-approved and internationally recognised?

Yes. EDH is issued under Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) standards and complies with STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. It is internationally recognised by flag states, ship operators, and employers.

Is there an exam for the EDH course?

Yes. EDH includes a written exam covering seamanship, watchkeeping duties, safety procedures, and deck operations. Practical competence is assessed through demonstrated skills and experience.

What sea service is required for EDH?

EDH requires documented sea service in a deck capacity, in line with MCA requirements. Admissions will review your sea service records to confirm eligibility before enrolment or examination.

What’s the difference between Deckhand packages, Superyacht Deck Crew and EDH?

This is a key distinction:

  • Deckhand Packages
Entry-level training bundles designed for new crew. They focus on basic safety, seamanship introduction, and employability — not officer progression.
  • Superyacht Deck Crew
Yacht-specific training aimed at working on superyachts, with emphasis on line handling, yacht operations, and industry standards. These are often non-STCW or partially STCW and focused on yachting careers rather than commercial certification.
  • Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)
A formal STCW qualification for professional deck crew on commercial vessels, required for progression toward officer certification. EDH is regulatory, not lifestyle- or yacht-industry focused.

In short: Deckhand / Superyacht courses help you enter the industry; EDH qualifies you to progress within it.

Does EDH replace deckhand or superyacht training?

No. EDH does not replace entry-level deck or yacht training. It assumes you already have experience and focuses on certifying competence for regulated deck roles under STCW.

How important is English for the EDH course?

English is essential — both written and spoken. You must understand instructions, safety procedures, and complete the written exam in English. Clear communication is mandatory for watchkeeping duties.
