The IYT Master of Yachts 200GT Unlimited is a professional Certificate of Competency demonstrating advanced knowledge of celestial navigation (astronavigation), worldwide meteorology, and ocean passage planning. It confirms that the holder is capable of planning and executing long ocean voyages using traditional sextant navigation alongside modern seamanship practices.
This course is designed for experienced skippers and masters who already hold a Master of Yachts Limited (or an accepted equivalent) and are ready to progress to global ocean navigation. It is not an entry-level qualification and assumes prior command experience.
Upon successful completion, holders may work as:
Final authority always rests with the vessel’s flag state and insurer.
The Unlimited certificate focuses on astronavigation and worldwide passage planning, rather than coastal or near-offshore navigation. It confirms competence to navigate out of sight of land, across oceans, using celestial methods rather than relying solely on electronic systems.
The course is delivered over 6 intensive days. It is a focused theory-based programme dedicated to celestial navigation, meteorology, and long-range voyage planning.
The syllabus includes:
This is a command-level ocean navigation course, not a refresher.
The course is taught by an International Yacht Training instructor who also holds the Master Mariner qualification. Galileo Maritime Academy is the only training centre in the Asia-Pacific region offering IYT MoY Unlimited training delivered at this level of professional command experience.
Yes. IYT Master of Yachts certificates have been recognised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) since 1998 for use on Red Ensign registered yachts up to 200GT.
Due to MCA recognition, the certificate is accepted by many flag states worldwide, including Australia (via Australian Maritime Safety Authority), Cayman Islands, Malta, UAE, Canada, and multiple Red Ensign registries.
However, acceptance is never automatic, and candidates must always confirm approval with the relevant flag state or maritime authority.
Master of Yachts certificates are commercial qualifications, and IYT follows current MCA medical standards. Candidates with colour blindness cannot be issued commercial certificates. Only Ishihara or CAD tests are accepted; lantern tests are not valid.
