Minimum age

18 years old

Sea Service Requirements

3,000 nautical miles logged on genuine cruises or passages (not short day trips)

At least 2,000 miles must be on coastal voyages (not ocean crossings)

Minimum 50 days on board at sea (a day = 24 hours)

Minimum 30 hours of night watch underway, with at least 6 hours as captain/watch leader

Knowledge

Working understanding of Collision Regulations and basic paper chart coastal navigation

Communication

VHF or Radio Operator Certificate

VHF Certification

Candidates without a VHF SRC certificate can study online and take the exam during the MoY course (additional fees apply)

Practical Experience

Adequate experience at the helm of a sailboat or twin-screw power vessel

Verification

Sea time must be verified and signed by the vessel’s skipper (self-signed entries require independent confirmation)

Medical

Valid physical/medical certificate including eyesight and color vision test

Safety Training

Valid MCA-approved STCW 2010 Basic Training certificates are required before the Certificate of Competency can be issued

Candidates without valid STCW can update or complete the full course alongside MoY training (additional fees apply)

Is This the Same as the Master of Yachts 200GT Limited Course?

No.
This is a preparation course, not a certification course. It does not issue a Certificate of Competency. Instead, it prepares you academically and practically to confidently undertake the IYT Master of Yachts 200GT Limited (Power) course.

Who Teaches the MoY Preparation Course?

The course is taught by an International Yacht Training–certified instructor who also holds the Master Mariner qualification. Galileo Maritime Academy is the only training centre in the Asia-Pacific region offering MoY preparation delivered at this level.

How Long Is the Master of Yachts Preparation Course?

The course runs for 7 days in total:

  • 5 days shore-based theory preparation
  • 2 days sea-based practical training

Dates are scheduled on request, subject to instructor availability.

What Is Covered During the Theory Preparation?

The shore-based phase focuses on key MoY theory subjects, including:

  • navigation and chartwork
  • ship stability
  • meteorology
  • passage planning and exam technique

It includes guided study, targeted exercises, and a mock examination to identify weak areas before the real exam.

What Is Included in the Practical (Sea-Based) Training?

The sea-based module takes place in Phang Nga Bay aboard a 13m twin-screw motor yacht and includes:

  • berthing, unberthing, anchoring
  • man overboard recovery
  • blind navigation techniques
  • practical chartwork and coastal navigation

Accommodation and all meals are included during this phase.

Yes.
Mock examinations and study assessments are a key part of the programme, helping candidates understand exam structure, expectations, and personal readiness before attempting the certification course.

Yes.
