No. This is a command-level professional course intended for experienced crew. It assumes strong prior knowledge of navigation, seamanship, and watchkeeping, and is not suitable for entry-level candidates.
The course runs over 13 days in total, split into 7 days of theory, a 2-day break, and 6 days of live-aboard practical training. The structure is designed to support examinations and allow time for theory resits if required.
The theory and practical modules must both be successfully completed within a 12-month period. All theory modules must be passed before final certification can be issued, and progression is governed by IYT time-limit rules. Schools are audited to ensure these timelines are strictly followed.
If a theory exam is failed and timing does not allow a resit before the practical course, the candidate has 30 days from the end of the practical course to pass the theory resit. If a candidate fails a theory exam more than once, or does not pass the resit within this 30-day window, the entire theory and practical course must be retaken.
Each theory resit attempt costs 10,000 THB per person. Resits must be completed within the IYT-defined time limits in order to remain eligible for certification.
All available paperwork must be received by the school within one month of completing the theory or practical module (including all exams, pass or fail). If any documents are missing, candidates have up to 12 months to submit them. Failure to complete and submit all required paperwork within 12 months means the entire course must be retaken.
Theory and final practical courses must be completed within a maximum 12-month period. All paperwork must also be submitted within 12 months of completing the practical course. If these timelines are exceeded, the candidate must retake both the theory and practical modules in full to obtain certification.
This certificate allows you to work professionally as Master (Captain) on qualifying yachts. The exact role and limitations depend on the yacht’s flag, size, operation, and insurer requirements. Employers and registries will always have final authority on acceptance.

The certificate is widely accepted due to its MCA recognition, and many flag states and authorities recognise it for professional yacht operations. However, acceptance is not automatic worldwide, and candidates must always confirm approval with the relevant flag state or maritime authority.
Yes. As of December 2024, the IYT Master of Yachts Limited (Sail or Power & Sail) is accepted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as part of the prerequisites for the Sailing Master Offshore (NC) CoC. Candidates must still meet all additional AMSA requirements independently.
The final assessment includes a practical command examination, navigation exercises, and an oral exam. Candidates are evaluated on safety, decision-making, leadership, and overall competence as Master.
All final examinations are conducted by an independent IYT examiner, ensuring objectivity and compliance with international certification standards.
