HELM Operational (Human Element, Leadership and Management – Operational level) is an MCA-mandated STCW course focusing on leadership, teamwork, and human factors for officers at the operational level. HELM Operational is required for seafarers progressing toward Officer of the Watch (OOW) and other operational-level officer roles. It is a mandatory component of MCA officer certification pathways.
Yes. The course is delivered in accordance with Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) requirements and complies with STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. MCA approval ensures international recognition by flag states and employers.
The course focuses on human factors and operational leadership, including situational awareness, decision-making, communication, teamwork, workload and fatigue management, error management, and safety culture onboard.
Yes. There is a written exam assessing understanding of leadership principles, human factors, and operational decision-making. Assessment is scenario-based and aligned with real shipboard situations.
While HELM Operational is classroom-based, assessment includes case studies, group discussions, and scenario analysis. These exercises evaluate communication, judgement, and leadership behaviour rather than physical practical skills.
If you do not meet the required standard, you are allowed to take a resit. Instructors will explain what areas need improvement before reassessment.
English is essential — both written and spoken. You must actively participate in discussions, understand complex scenarios, and complete the written exam in English. Communication skills are a core part of this course.
