Frequently
Asked Questions

What is the PST Refresher course?

The PST Refresher is an STCW Updating module for seafarers who already hold a valid or recently expired PST certificate and need to maintain STCW compliance. It refreshes essential sea-survival knowledge and practical skills required in abandon-ship situations.

Who issues and recognises the PST Refresher certificate?

The certificate is issued under Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) standards and complies with STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. MCA-approved refresher training is internationally recognised by flag states, yacht operators, and maritime employers.

Who needs to take the PST Refresher?

The PST Refresher is required for crew whose STCW Basic Safety certificates are expiring or have expired, and who meet the eligibility criteria for updating rather than re-taking the full course. Admissions will confirm eligibility before booking.

Is there a practical assessment?

Yes. Practical assessment takes place during in-water survival exercises, including lifejacket use, water entry, group survival techniques, and liferaft procedures. Instructors assess safety awareness and correct technique.

What should I bring or wear for the PST Refresher?

For survival practical sessions, long pants are mandatory for safety reasons. Students without suitable long pants will not be permitted to participate. Bring clothing you don’t mind getting wet and a change of clothes.

What happens if I fail the exam or practical assessment?

If you do not meet the required standard, you may take a resit. Instructors will explain what needs improvement before the retake. The focus is competence and safety, not failure.
