The PADI Open Water Diver certification is the world’s most recognised entry-level scuba qualification. It allows you to dive independently with a buddy to a depth of 18 metres anywhere in the world.
The course is suitable for complete beginners, including:
No prior diving experience is required.
Yes. While not mandatory, scuba certification is a strong advantage for yacht crew, particularly deck crew and chase-boat operators. Many captains value crew who are comfortable in the water and certified to dive safely.
The course includes theory learning, confined-water (pool) training, and open-water dives. You’ll learn dive planning, equipment use, buoyancy control, safety procedures, and underwater communication.
Yes. The course includes knowledge reviews and a final theory assessment, usually completed online via PADI eLearning. There are also practical skill assessments during confined and open-water dives. The focus is on understanding and safe performance, not academic testing.
You don’t need to be an athlete, but you must be comfortable in the water. Basic swimming ability and reasonable health are required. You’ll also need to complete a PADI medical questionnaire before starting the course.
The PADI Open Water certification does not expire. However, if you haven’t dived for a long time, a refresher (such as PADI ReActivate) is strongly recommended before diving again.
