Frequently
Asked Questions

What is the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification?

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification builds on your Open Water skills and helps you gain experience, confidence, and depth capability through guided adventure dives rather than classroom-heavy training.

Do I need to be an “advanced” diver to take this course?

No. Despite the name, the course is designed for recently certified Open Water divers. It’s about progression and experience, not expertise. Many divers take it shortly after completing Open Water.

Is PADI Advanced Open Water useful for superyacht crew?

Yes. This certification is particularly useful for deck crew, chase boat drivers, and water-sports crew. It demonstrates increased water confidence, situational awareness, and the ability to dive in more varied conditions — all valued on yachts.

What dives are included in the course?

You’ll complete five Adventure Dives, including:

  • Deep Dive (to a maximum of 30 metres)
  • Underwater Navigation

Plus three elective dives such as night diving, buoyancy, wreck, or boat diving, depending on conditions and interests.

Is there an exam?

No traditional exam. Knowledge development is completed through short theory briefings and reviews linked to each dive. Assessment is practical and performance-based, focused on safe execution rather than written testing.

Do I need special fitness or experience for deeper dives?

You need to be medically fit to dive and comfortable in the water, but no exceptional fitness is required. The course is conducted progressively, under close instructor supervision, with safety as the priority.

How long does the PADI Advanced Open Water certification last?

The certification does not expire. However, if you don’t dive regularly, a refresher is recommended before returning to deeper or more challenging dives.

What can I do after completing PADI Advanced Open Water?

After certification, you can:

  • dive to 30 metres
  • access more advanced dive sites worldwide
  • progress toward Rescue Diver, specialty courses, or professional pathways

For yacht crew, it strengthens your overall water competence profile.
