Frequently
Asked Questions

What is “Updating STCW10 Basic Training”?

This course is for seafarers who already hold STCW Basic Safety Training and need to renew their certificates every 5 years to remain legally compliant. It refreshes all required safety competencies without repeating the full initial training.

Who should take this course?

You should take Updating STCW10 Basic Training if:

  • your STCW certificates are still valid or only recently expired, and
  • you meet the renewal requirements, including recent sea service

Admissions will confirm eligibility before your course start.

What modules are refreshed during this training?

Updating STCW10 Basic Training refreshes the practical elements of PST (Personal Survival Techniques) and FPFF (Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting), as required by the MCA for STCW revalidation.
Modules such as EFA, PSSR, and PSA are not re-taught or re-examined as part of the Updating course.

What if my original STCW certificate was not MCA-issued?

That is usually acceptable. Non-MCA STCW certificates can be accepted if they were issued by an authority on the IMO White List and comply with STCW 2010. Certificates are checked before confirmation.

How long will my refreshed STCW be valid?

Once completed successfully, your updated STCW certification will be valid for another 5 years, as required under STCW 2010 regulations.

What should I bring or wear for Updating STCW10?

  • Fire training: long socks covering your legs up to the knees
  • Survival practical sessions: long pants are mandatory

Students without suitable clothing will not be permitted to take part in practical exercises.
