Frequently
Asked Questions

Is the Steward/ess Training only for women?

No. The steward/ess role is open to all genders. What matters is professionalism, attention to detail, service standards, and presentation — not gender.

Do I need previous yachting or hospitality experience?

No prior yachting experience is required. This course is suitable for complete beginners and for those transitioning from hotels, resorts, airlines, restaurants, or customer-facing roles.

Is there an age limit to become a yacht steward/ess?

There is no strict age limit. Most students are between 18 and 50+. Captains look for fitness, reliability, communication skills, and attitude rather than age.

What will I learn during the Steward/ess Training?

The 5-day, hands-on programme covers:

  • Life onboard yachts and crew roles
  • Professional food & beverage service (formal, plated, buffet, silver service)
  • Wine basics, bartending, and classic cocktails
  • Housekeeping and laundry to superyacht standards

The course also includes Food Hygiene Level 2 certification.

Why is Food Hygiene Level 2 important for yacht steward/esses?

Food Hygiene Level 2 is essential for any crew handling food or drinks. It meets international food safety standards and is often required or expected on yachts, cruise ships, and commercial vessels.

What is the ENG1 medical certificate and do I need it?

ENG1 is a seafarer medical examination confirming you are fit to work at sea. You don’t need it to attend the course, but it is required before you can be employed on a yacht.

Are tattoos and piercings allowed in the yachting industry?

It depends on the yacht and owner. Many yachts allow small, discreet tattoos and simple ear piercings if they can be covered by uniform. Large or highly visible tattoos (neck, hands, face) and facial piercings may limit job opportunities, especially on high-end or private yachts.

How do I progress from Junior Steward/ess to senior roles?

Typical career progression is:
Junior Stew → 2nd Stew → Chief Stew → Purser

Advancement depends on sea time, strong references, and additional training such as wine, advanced service, and leadership courses.

Does the course guarantee a yacht job?

No course can guarantee employment. However, this training gives you the practical skills, certificates, and industry understanding captains and chief stews expect from entry-level interior crew.

“Five years ago, I came to Galileo with zero yachting experience. Today, I’m Chief Stewardess on a 55m motor yacht, leading my own team and travelling the world. Galileo didn’t just teach me the skills — it gave me the confidence, mindset, and support network I still lean on. Even now, I turn to my instructor Shemaine for advice. She’s become more than a mentor — she’s a lifelong friend.”

NATASHIA S.

“Galileo didn’t just prepare me for yachting — it launched my entire career. The intensive training, especially with mentors like Shemaine and Tom, gave me a deep understanding of service, safety, and yacht operations. After graduating, I joined the Galileo team behind the scenes — from cleaning duties to admin roles — which taught me professionalism, discipline, and teamwork at every level. That foundation helped me secure my first role on a 60m+ private yacht, and today, I’m proud to lead as Chief Stewardess on a busy 50m+ charter vessel. My journey proves that with the right training and mindset, anything is possible.”
